Public Phones

Most public phones in Bulgaria are now worked by phone cards, which can be purchased in many places. There are some phones still in use that accept coins, but you may find that many of these are out of order due to vandelism. the are a few providers of public telephones including:

Betkom - For local and long-distance phone calls to almost any place in Europe.

Bulpost - Phones are hard to find.

BulFon - The most common. Very reliable for local and long-distance calls to Europe and the U.S.

Private phones

The Bulgarian Post and Communications Committee has embarked on a major project to digitize Bulgaria' s antiquated telephone system. As a result, many phone lines, private and business, have been replaced with new ones, which makes life much easier. If this hasn't happened in your neighbourhood, ask at the local telephone exchange to have a digital line installed. A leased line from the phone company is recommended for better quality connections.

Mobile phones

The most reliable way to conduct business in Bulgaria and to connect without any problems abroad is via a mobile telephone. Most UK mobile phones will roam in Bulgaria. But the cost of calls whilst roaming are very high. 

The best option if you intend to be a frequent visitor to Bulgaria is to buy a local sim card for use in your own phone.  Note: Your phone may need to be unlocked from your exsiting sim card to accept the Bulgarian sim. Many companies in the UK offer this service for around £10. 

As in the UK the Bulgarian mobile phone providers, Mtel and Globul offer either a contract or Pre-Paid option using scratch off cards.
